Baby Surprise Comes After Mom Sent Home From Hospital

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Ask any parent: Babies have their own plans.

And this little guy proved it by coming into the world when doctors didn't expect him to!

Doctors even sent his mom home, saying she wasn't ready to give birth yet.

But you won't believe where she ended up having the baby, and who helped make it happen.

"This is my third child, my second son, and he was named after his grandfather, Melik Leroy Smith," said the child's mother, Melissa Hughes Smith.

And he may be the calmest newborn ever FOX 29's Claudia Gomez reported. Surprising, considering the commotion he caused when he suddenly appeared Thursday evening.

"I actually had him in the parking lot of my apartment," his mother said.

That's right, Melik arrived on a piece of asphalt in Northeast Philly.

"Right after we closed the door to the apartment I felt the contractions coming again, and I knew the baby was coming," Hughes Smith said.

She and her husband had gone to a hospital five hours earlier, but doctors sent her home. They told her labor wasn't progressing quickly, and she'd have to come back later. Hughes thought she had more time.

"I was expecting it to be longer than it was because my first two children took between 20 and 24 hours to deliver," she said. "I was in labor that long."

LIttle Melik caught everybody by surprise. His older brother and sister were both born a week late, and he wasn't due until April 4. But when he decided to arrive, there was no stopping him.

Hughes and her husband tried to make it back to the hospital. They got as far as their car.

"I was in the passenger seat, and I was half-way outside the vehicle," the mother said, laughing.

Luckily, Melik's dad is a big football fan.

"He was ready. He's a sports person, so he was like in position, like to catch a football," mom said.

Luckier still, Melik's grandmother is a nurse.

"He was hollering for my mother to get a towel, who was in the apartment, looking out the window because she heard all the screaming," Hughes Smith said.

Grandma delivered the baby, and dad cut the umbilical cord. It was a true family affair, and a story Melik no doubt will tell the rest of his life, Gomez reported Friday night from outside at Hahnemann University Hospital.

"It's one of those things that you see on TV, that you hear another couple talking about on the news. It's not something that you expect to happen to you," the mother said, later calling her son, "My miracle Easter baby."
