Why Easter falls on Sunday, March 31st this year

Easter is a unique holiday in that it can vary by over a month. Astronomy and Meteorology come into play to determine the exact date each year. How the sun, moon and earth are aligned plays a significant role. The only thing consistent about the Christian holiday is that it always falls on a Sunday. Easter is officially observed on the first Sunday, after the first full moon, after the vernal equinox (the start of spring in the northern hemisphere).

The vernal equinox this year was on March 20th. The first full moon after that date was this last Wednesday. This coming Sunday is the first Sunday after that full moon making it Easter! Because the lunar cycle is about 29 1/2 days, the day that Easter lands on can vary by over a month! Much like this year, some may endure late winter snow storms while others could coincide with very mild late April weather.

The earliest date that Easter will fall on in the next few hundred years is March 22, 2285. Coming up in 25 years it will be observed on April 25, 2038. The weather here in southern California is looking much better than what we were thinking just a few days ago. It now looks like skies will be partly to mostly cloudy with some sunshine and just a slight chance of scattered light showers.

For the latest weather, traffic and breaking news, turn into FOX 11 starting at 4:30 am every Monday through Friday. My forecast are posted here on myfoxla.com as well.
