Two rescued from ice shelf on Lake Zurich

LAKE ZURICH, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two people were rescued off a shelf of ice next to open water about 100 yards from the shore of a northwest suburban lake Wednesday afternoon, Pioneer Press is reporting.

According to Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department, a public works employee was first on the scene at Paulus Park beach about 2:30 p.m., but was unable to reach the victims.

Fire department personnel were able to make it out to them using cold-water rescue suits and personal flotation devices. After placing flotation devices on each, both were assisted to the shore by 3:04 p.m. They were taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

Two other youths were observed on the lake as well, walking on the ice away from the Paulus Park shoreline. They also fell into the water but regained their footing, Lake Zurich fire officials said. Both were escorted back to the park to be evaluated and were later released to a parent.

Lake Zurich officials remind residents the lake is very dangerous and the ice is not strong enough to support much weight.

"No one should test the ice once warmer temperatures have been present and open areas of water are evident," a fire department statement said. "This could have been a very tragic incident, as the cold-water temperature will quickly overcome people.

The Long Grove, Arlington Heights and Palatine Rural fire departments assisted.
