Wild turkey survival focus of northern Arizona study

Posted: Updated:

FREDONIA, Ariz. (AP) - State wildlife managers are studying the survival of wild turkeys in northern Arizona.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department says its 2-year study will look at whether the fall hunting season and winter conditions negatively affect hens.

Over the last three months, nearly 100 Merriam's turkeys were captured on the Kaibab National Forest using rocket-propelled nets. 50 female turkeys were outfitted with radio transmitters, and most of the turkeys were released.

Game specialist Tom McCall says hens typically survive no more than three years in the wild but can live up to seven years. He says their life span can be cut short by harsh winters, predators, hunters and a lack of food.

The results of the study will be used to help develop fall hunting recommendations.
