Roy Firestone: They Can't Get A Crowd Excited Down There

Posted: Updated:

Ben Howland has been fired as UCLA'S basketball coach. Despite winning the conference title this year, his highly talented teams failed to get past the first round of the tournament for three straight years. He saw tons of players jump to the NBA after freshman and sophomore years.

Now the school pays out more than 3 million to ben and hopes that they can woo a coach like Shaka Smart or Billy Donovan or Brad Stevens...but will it be any different for the new coach? John Wooden wouldn't be "John Wooden" today.

1. It's going to cost millions more from UCLA boosters to get a "new and exciting young coach" at some point it affects the students, the fans. And they'll have to pay even more. For courtside seat guarantees...some UCLA alums were asked to donate up to 17 thousand dollars. Seat licenses...money thrown at a problem that is valued more than money for academic departments. The basketball coach makes 4 times what the chancellor makes.

2. Sellout crowds??...only 5 crowds of more than 10,000 at the new 137 million dollar Pauley...6pm start times to accommodate TV packages.

3. Only 22 of the 227 public schools in div 1 actually make a profit...UCLA is basically a break even school.

Since the time Yasiel Puig came to the Dodgers, there have been rumors about how he was able to defect from Cuba. Some of the rumors seemed to wild to believe, but apparently many of them are true.
