SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Cracks in the twin steeples of a beloved church in downtown Savannah are undergoing repairs, with total costs estimated at $1.5 million.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in the city's downtown historic district has been covered in scaffolding 120 feet high since January. The work is expected to wrap up in the summer.

Cracks discovered inside the bell tower last fall prompted engineers to inspect the outside of the 137-year-old steeples. Workers found chunks of stucco breaking off and ready to fall onto sidewalks below, and more cracks between the bricks underneath. Leaks in stained glass windows also needed fixing.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah isn't sure what caused the damage. Church rector Monsignor William O'Neill says some blame an earthquake felt downtown in August 2011.
