Principal reports case of meningitis at Fayette Co. school

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -

An assistant principal at Rising Star Middle School in Fayette County sent a letter home to parents on Friday about a confirmed case of bacterial meningitis at the school.

Bacterial meningitis is an infection causing inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is considered contagious for several days.

A child with bacterial meningitis may return to school after 24 hours of antibiotic treatment.

The assistant principal urged parents to inform the school if their children develop symptoms.
