TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Frontier Airlines says the announced plan to close the control tower at Trenton-Mercer Airport won't affect its plans to further expand service there.
The Ewing airport was on a hit list Friday of 149 air traffic control facilities nationwide to be shuttered by the Federal Aviation Administration due to federal budget cuts.
The closings will start April 7.
The agency says the closures will not force the shutdown of any airports. But they will require pilots using them to coordinate takeoffs and landings over a shared radio frequency with no help from ground controllers.
Trenton-Mercer recently announced that Frontier, its main carrier, would add five new destinations next month.
Mercer County executive Brian Hughes says the closure raises security concerns but the airport will continue operations as usual.
