TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A state commission has voted unanimously to support efforts aimed at providing local law enforcement greater access to mental health records of people purchasing guns. The group also wants to work toward improving the reporting of information that might restrict a person's ability to own a firearm.

The Arizona Daily Star reports the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission voted unanimously Thursday to support efforts aimed at bolstering the state's reporting and access to the information but the project could be stymied.

Gov. Jan Brewer's budget didn't include funds for the effort, estimated to cost about $28 million.

Arizona only reports a portion of required mental health records of people who have been involuntarily committed, but the state doesn't report on people who have been found by a judge to be incompetent for mental health reasons.
