Watching YouTube can sometimes lead to hours of distraction. But while you're not working and watching YouTube, some metro Atlanta residents are becoming virtual stars, and making money with YouTube.
It's 9 a.m. and east Atlanta resident Tasha Edwards is about to go to work.
She doesn't work in an office, she works in her kitchen. Edwards is known to her YouTube subscribers as the Sweetest Vegan.
It's not just a hobby for the college graduate who couldn't find a job after earning her master's degree, it's how she makes her money.
"I started watching so many videos. I was like, why aren't I making videos? And I started doing what I love which is baking vegan and health conscious desserts," said Edwards.
YouTube allows billions of people to discover, watch and share originally-created videos. Through their YouTube partner program those "creators" can generate an income.
Canton resident Tiffany D.'s videos have accumulated 114 million views with her makeup tutorial videos. And the silly antics of the Hudson Brothers, who also live in metro Atlanta, have gotten 144 million views. All that viewing means dividends provided by the advertisers that you see at the beginning or bottom of each video.
"We have creators that run the whole spectrum. From the person who's making just a little bit of pocket money all the way up to we have thousands of creators across the U.S. who are making over six figures," said Kate Mason of You Tube.
But like Edwards said, it's a time commitment. In order to make a lot of money, you can't just do it on the side. Tasha has created more than 400 videos. She says when you pick your passion, the money will come, and now she is no longer looking for a job.
If you want to hit the YouTube jackpot, here are some tips: Pick your passion -- remember you'll have to spend a lot of time talking about it. Get educated about your topic, and always find ways to improve your videos. Finally, watch others' videos and support their endeavors.
