PD: Woman found dead in Mesa

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

Police are investigating a fight between a couple that turned deadly in the east valley.

Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato says they found a woman dead near 2nd Avenue and Mesa Drive.

The 24-year-old woman and a man were yelling at each other Thursday morning, and things got physical. The woman then crossed the street, and collapsed in front of a home where she died moments later, police say.

"I noticed she had a gash in her throat and I pretty much tried to cover the hole, pretty much just trying to save her and wait until the police and all that came," said a witness.

Officers recovered a knife at the scene, although at this time, it cannot be directly linked to the victim's death.

The man was treated at the hospital for injuries sustained and has since been released. He is now being questioned by detectives.

No names have been released. The investigation is ongoing.
