Man facing multiple charges after slamming SUV into car

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Police a 27-year-old man driving an SUV that slammed into another car and killed two people is  facing a laundry list of charges on Thursday.

According to police, they were conducting a neighborhood sweep on Wednesday night when they found cocaine in Jeremiah Warthen's motel room. They said he first rammed a squad car and then fled, apparently in a panic.

Police say they lost sight of the vehicle, and then later discovered that it had run into the car which had six people inside.

Authorities say three generations of one family were inside the car that was hit by Warthen. Alicia Moxley, 57, and her 3-year-old granddaughter, Jordan Haynes, were pronounced dead at the scene. A 17-year-old girl and Moxley's 58-year-old  husband were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Two boys, 5 and 7 years old, were taken to Children's Healthcare at Egleston.

The 17-year-old, who was the driver, is a junior at King High School. She suffered two broken arms, a possible broken leg, a ruptured spleen and internal injuries, according to the family.

The two boys were said to be in stable condition on Thursday.

Moxley's daughter, Zakyia Davis, said her mother had a huge heart.

"I am the woman I am because of her. She didn't raise me to have vengeance in my heart. I don't have any but somebody is going to pay," Davis said.

Warthen is facing six felonies and seven misdemeanors, including two counts of vehicular homicide, hit-and-run and drug charges.

Parish says Warthen is also facing drug trafficking charges after police found drugs at the hotel where he was staying.

"I'm sorry for their loss. It was accident," Warthen said as he was led by deputies into his first court appearance on Thursday.

Warthen is being held without bond. He is scheduled to make another court appearance April 19.

The family of Alicia Moxley said the funerals for her and her granddaughter are pending.
