Garbage truck hits power pole, causes outage in Phoenix

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Parts of a west Phoenix neighborhood was without electricity for several hours after a garbage truck knocked down power lines.

Authorities say a Republic Services garbage truck driver hit the power pole about 6:30 a.m. Thursday when he backed out of the alley to avoid a construction site.

Ian Anderson and Bob Johansen were in the neighborhood when the power went out.

"I heard the big bang and the lights flickered and they went out," says Johansen.

"I looked out and saw the electrical wires out there like swinging around."

Phoenix Fire Department officials say the truck driver was stuck in his vehicle until crews arrived but he was unhurt.

Arizona Public Service officials say 120 customers initially were without power. They say electricity was restored to all but a few homes and businesses by late morning with the rest expected to have power back on by Thursday afternoon.
