NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A bowl purchased at a tag sale in New York for $3 sold for $2.23 million at Sotheby's auction house.

The ivory-colored glazed ceramic 'Ding' bowl of the northern Song dynasty of China is five inches in diameter and a thousand years old.

The family that purchased the bowl in 2007 had no idea of its value. They wished to remain anonymous, according to Sotheby's.

Four bidders were in a heated battled Tuesday for the bowl which was estimated to sell in the $200K-$300K range. The winner was London art dealer Giuseppe Eskenazi who paid the hefty price.

According to the auction house, Song ceramics are highly sought after by Chinese Art collectors.
