Storms damage farm in Meriwether County

MERIWETHER COUNTY, Ga. -

Strong storms tore through parts of north Georgia on Monday night. Aerials views from SKYFOX 5 showed flattened trees across Meriwether County.

Cordie Hancock has witnessed plenty of storms in her 79 years, but she said this one shook her to her foundation. She spent Tuesday surveying the damage at the home and property generations of her family called home.

"Roof was damaged...the chimney was torn off and on the inside the sheet rock is falling," Hancock said.

The farm has a long history in her family, dating all the way back to her grandfather.

"He came out of the Civil War, he built on over 50 acres, he built a log cabin. And then he built this house and that's where my mother was born," said Hancock. "And I was born here too."

But Hancock says the loss of the pecan orchard is the toughest.

"Well, I thought of my granddaddy when he worked hard to set them out. 1927, I think," she said."My husband would shake them, shake the trees and Daddy would have us on Sunday afternoon picking up pecans."

Hancock's sister lived in the house until recently, when she moved into a nursing home.

"I'm just thankful that she wasn't in the house," Hancock said.
