Some residents around Dobbins Air Reserve Base say they are being awakened early in the morning by the sounds of "Reveille."
The Air Force says it has made a digital upgrade to its emergency notification system, replacing a 20-year-old analog alarm system. It calls the new program "Giant Voice."
Dobbins says Giant Voices' primary mission is to notify base personal of emergencies at the base and adjacent Clay National Guard. Its secondary missions are to play "Reveille" at 8 a.m. and "Retreat" as well as the national anthem at 4 p.m.
Neighbors say the quarter-million dollar upgrade is much more noticeable than the old system.
Smyrna City Council member Teri Anulewics said she's heard complaints.
"People are saying, 'It is jerking me to attention at eight o'clock in the morning.' Some people love it some people aren't that crazy about it," Anulewics said.
Dobbins officials said they're see what they can do about the volume.
"We have received some complaints and we're certainly investigating those complaints to identify where we can make adjustments," said Captain Patrick Simmons of Dobbins Air Reserve Base.
Christian Brooks of nearby Car dealership Nalley Infinity Marietta said no adjustments are necessary.
"When bad storms come we can hear them alert that. From a safety aspect that helps," said Brooks.
"Reveille" and "Retreat" are military traditions that date back to before the Civil War.
