KIRA TREVINO MURDER: Divers search Keller Lake in Maplewood

Posted: Updated:
MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (KMSP) -

A dive team was called in to search Keller Lake in Maplewood on Tuesday after an item of interest related to the disappearance of Kira Trevino was found over the weekend.

Authorities still have not released what that item was, but a K-9 alerted to the scent of a cadaver near the west side of the water over the weekend as well. That prompted police to have investigators plunge under the ice for the first time.

"Our goal here is to bring Kira home," said Sgt. Paul Paulos, spokesman for the St. Paul Police Department. "We have to look at every piece of evidence that comes across -- every lead, every stone -- until she is brought home to her family."

About eight divers were rotated in and out of the frigid waters as they searched a 40-45 foot radius; however, the search wrapped up on Tuesday afternoon with no additional finds.

People who have been following developments with the story say they want closure for the family and the community.

"There are some stories that stick out more than others and this one definitely stuck out to me," says Amber Hansen. "For some reason I don't know."

Although she's still listed as missing, police believe 30-year-old Kira Trevino to be dead, citing large quantities of blood found inside the St. Paul home she shared with her husband, 39-year-old Jeffery Trevino, and a roommate.

Jeffery Trevino remains jailed and has been charged with murder in his wife's disappearance.

A volunteer search team with a Facebook page called Justice for Kira Trevino plans to search nearby Beaver Lake on Saturday afternoon. Volunteers will meet at 1050 Edgewater Blvd. in St. Paul at 2pm.
