Man accused in Walton Co. home invasion pleads not guilty

Posted: Updated:
WALTON COUNTY, Ga. -

A suspected burglar who was shot by a Loganville woman during a home invasion pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.

Authorities say Paul Slater was shot six times by a Walton County woman after breaking into her house. The mother of two heard Slater using a crowbar to get through her front door. Deputies say that the working mom grabbed her 9-year-old twins and a .38 revolver and hid in a crawl space upstairs. When Slater opened up the door, the mother shot him.

Slater's attorneys say that the father of six had planned to plead guilty, but walked away from the deal when prosecutors insisted on more prison time.

Attorney Neal Ainsworth conceded that Slater should never have broken into the home. He says Slater admits that and is very remorseful. He says they were ready to plead guilty.

"We were prepared to plead guilty today on a recommendation that we had received...negotiations broke down," said Ainsworth.

The defense attorney would not say what the offer was, but clearly this case has been fast-tracked. The trial was reset for April 15.
