Home Depot Opens 'Solution Center' To Aid Sandy Recovery

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. -

Slowly but surely, New Jersey is getting back to normal after Hurricane Sandy.

On Monday, Gov. Chris Christie was down the shore to help reopen some of the businesses there, FOX's Matt Alvarez reported from Seaside Heights.

It's something Home Depot has never done before, open a "solution center" to assist people in need.

"This rebuilding effort is hugely important to the Home Depot, Chief Executive Officer Frank Blake said.

A total of 1,600 jobs will be added this spring season, Blake said, and some of those jobs will open up in Seaside Heights.

"So, it's really driven by our folks who are in the community saying, 'We need to be closer to the need, and we said absolutely,'" Blake said.

Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers said, "I'm very grateful. The community is hurting right now. Whatever it's going to take to make them whole again is very much appreciated."

George Schmitt and his wife heard about Monday's grand opening and decided to come by and check it out.

"we've got two homes that are here on the barrier island that are strictly summer homes, but both of them have gotten swamped and, as a result, both of them have to be put back together," Schmitt said.

Christie was also on hand for Monday's event and had this to say: "My commitment is to try to restore the Jersey Shore stronger than it was before but with the same character that it had before."

The iconic boardwalk that was destroyed by Sandy is long gone. But now a new, more stable one is being wobbled on around the clock.

"We started putting down decking yesterday," Akers said. "We're driving pilings, doing girders and putting decking all at the same time. So, we're progressing at a very, very good rate."

The mayor says he hopes weather permitting that this entire boardwalk will be complete by Memorial Day weekend, Alvarez reported.
