Snow storm slows morning commute

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A late-winter storm brought several inches of snow to the tristate.

Forecasters say most of it melted on pavement because temperatures were above freezing, but several areas did see some accumulation.

A period of heavy rain followed the snow, melting some of what accumulated.

Parts of northern New Jersey reached up to five inches of snow and sleet. Areas of New York state saw amounts even higher.

Snow plows in Morristown, N.J., repeatedly treated the roads as the snow just kept accumulating.

The wintry mix changed to all rain on Tuesday.

The New York City Department of Sanitation issued a snow alert for Monday, March 18, 2013 starting at 1:00 PM.

A snow alert indicates the possibility of a snow event.  In preparation for a snow event, DSNY personnel begin initial equipment readiness, including loading 365 salt spreaders, attaching plows when necessary, preparing tire chains and notifying supplementary personnel as needed.  DSNY is coordinating with the Office of Emergency Management and the Department of Transportation on snow clearing protocol in accordance with each agency's written snow plan.  All relevant city agencies have been notified of the snow alert. DSNY will continue to monitor forecasts and will provide updates as the snow event approaches.

NJ Transit began the cross-honoring of tickets systemwide starting at 4 p.m. on Monday and it will remain in effect all day Tuesday to offer additional travel options because of the weather.

NYPD probing raising of white flags at Brooklyn Bridge

The NYPD is investigating a major security breach at the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the most highly secured landmarks in New York City. Two white flags — international symbols of surrender — fluttered from poles on the stone supports that hold cables above the bridge connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan. The flags had a faint appearance of the stars and stripes. The American flags that are normally up at the bridge appeared to have been removed.
