MESA, Ariz. -

Mesa police say a car ran into a tree and ended up nose down against a gas station sign on Friday night.

A 29-year-old man was driving a Honda Accord near McKellips Road and Horne when the car left the roadway and eventually landed nose down in front of a gas station.

The driver got out of the car and started running away, but was quickly caught by officers.

He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Mesa Police spokesman Sgt. Tony Landato says while the man was at the hospital, he told officers he wanted to hurt himself and that he caused the accident on purpose.

Officers say the man had no signs of alcohol consumption but there was possibly drugs in the car. The man's blood was taken to test for drugs.

The 29-year-old remained at the hospital for treatment and because staff consider him a danger to himself.

He faces possible charges of endangerment, criminal damage and DUI.
