Police shoot, kill man in Albany Park neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was shot and killed by police in the Northwest Side Albany Park neighborhood early Saturday.

Police shot a person about 2:55 a.m. in the 3300 block of West Wilson Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

Esau Castellanos-Bernal, 26, was shot multiple times and was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. His home address was not known as of Sunday morning.

The Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Larry Merritt said he was not aware of any officers being injured in the confrontation, but had no further details on the circumstances of the confrontation.

This is the second fatal police-involved shooting in three days involving Chicago Police.

John Harris died in a West Side apartment above Three Brothers Food Mart at 2:45 a.m. Thursday -- about 30 minutes after being shot by police responding to a domestic disturbance involving a "man with a gun," authorities said.

When officers entered the apartment in the 200 block of North Homan Avenue, Harris allegedly exited the bathroom and pointed the gun at them, authorities said.

When Harris did not drop the weapon as instructed, police fired, said Camden. None of the officers involved in that incident were injured, and police recovered two weapons from the apartment.

Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority, which examines all police-involved shootings, are investigating both deaths.
