Saving the California Dream: Furloughs Don't Come Cheap

Posted: Updated:

A new study by the Legislative Analysts Office reveals some unintended consequences from mandated furlough days for state workers.

The attempt to save money, by forcing workers to take unpaid furlough days, may end up costing money in the long run, FOX 11 Investigative Producer Heidi Cuda reports.

Although 95% of the employees took those furlough days, they then banked vacation days and when employees leave or retire, they're cashing out big-time.

That cash-out could cost a billion dollar a years in several years, which would virtually wipe out any savings from the furloughs.
