Suspect facing charges after pursuit with Avondale PD, DPS

Posted: Updated:

BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a Mesa man is facing charges after a stolen car chase with Avondale police and Arizona Department of Public Safety officers.

The situation ended Thursday afternoon in Buckeye after Avondale police released a police dog and DPS officers fired into the car.

DPS officials say 39-year-old Dennis Phillip Meeker remained hospitalized Friday with injuries caused mostly by the dog bite.

They say Meeker will be taken into custody and charged as soon as he's out of the hospital.

The pursuit began in Avondale when officers located a vehicle stolen Tuesday at gunpoint in Scottsdale and the suspect sped off.

Avondale police contacted DPS and officers began tracking the vehicle.

DPS officials say the driver fired at officers before he pulled over on a Buckeye bridge above a canal.
