PHOENIX -

A 19-year-old man is accused of firing shots at a police sergeant near SR 51 and Bell Road late Wednesday night.

Phoenix Police spokesman James Holmes says a sergeant was on patrol near 40th Street and Bell Road when he saw a suspicious car and attempted to pull it over for a traffic violation.

The driver, Dontrell Deshaun Williams, fled and eventually stopped near a pedestrian bridge that crosses the SR 51.

Holmes says four people ran from the car in different directions.

The sergeant focused on Williams and followed him as he ran up the walkway towards the bridge. As Williams was running, he allegedly shot at the sergeant multiple times with a handgun.

The sergeant took cover and wasn't injured.

Officers looked for Williams in the area but were unable to find him.

A person of interest was found in the area and who told officers about the registered owner of the vehicle.

Officers and detectives were eventually able to identify all four occupants of the car and say they found reason to believe Williams was the driver who shot at the sergeant.

Williams was interviewed and booked into jail on aggravated assault on a police offer and felony flight. No one else was charged.

Police don't know why Williams ran from police.
