Car crashes, catches fire on Loop 101; 1 dead

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

Authorities say a woman is dead after backing up on the shoulder of a Scottsdale freeway shoulder and losing control of her car, which crashed and caught fire around 2 p.m. Thursday.

The Loop 101-Pima eastbound lanes were closed at 56th Street for more than four hours before reopening around 6:30 p.m.

The name of the woman killed wasn't immediately released and DPS officials didn't know why she was backing up on the busy freeway near the 56th Street exit.

Department of Public Safety officials say the crash involved three other vehicles.  The woman's car was flattened and sustained heavy fire damage.

She was declared dead at the scene.

"This is one of those examples of why it's important to secure your load and make sure that nothing comes off of your vehicles," said DPS spokesman Carrick Cook.

The people in the other vehicles weren't injured in the crash.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
