Atlanta neighborhoods mark 5th anniversary of tornado

Posted: Updated:

Thursday marked the fifth anniversary of a tornado that hit downtown Atlanta.

The EF-2 tornado packed winds of more than 120 mph, shattering windows and spreading debris across the streets.

The Westin and Omni hotels lost hundreds of windows.

The storm flattened the roof of the Fultondale lofts. Then the twister roared through the historic Oakland Cemetery knocking down 7,000 monuments. The tornado finally landed in the Cabbagetown neighborhood.

"I no sooner stepped in the door, and it hit. I remember leaning against the door really, really hard and hearing the capstones from my two chimneys come tumbling into the roof…It was the classic freight train sound," said Bridget Blair.

Bridget says when the dust settled, her neighbor's roof was it her front yard.

"People had broken windows all over the place. Both windows in my station wagon, the windshield and the rear windows, were broken. Dents and breaks, holes in roofs. It was all over in a flash but it was really quite dramatic," Blair said.

Bridget says the neighborhood was naked because after many mature trees came crashing down. Despite all the destructive wins, there were very few injuries. One man died, but overall, many in Cabbagetown were surprised it wasn't more deadly.

"It was just stunning in a way that I don't ever remember ever being impressed with nature's power before.  We really dodged a bullet because this could have been horrible," said Blair.

Neighbors said the storm brought them together and they pitched in to help each other out in its aftermath.
