Woman accidentally shoots herself following gun class

Posted: Updated:
CRETE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

It was unclear whether she failed the class, but a 42-year-old south suburban woman suffered a serious gunshot wound while putting her handgun away after a gun safety course lass week.

Will County Sheriff's deputies were called to a pole barn in the 25000 block of South Klemme Road in Crete about 5 p.m. on March 9 for a woman being shot.

The owner of Fortress Defense Consultants, a company that provides a variety of firearm training programs, told deputies he had just finished an 8-hour firearms class when the Midlothian woman was attempting to put her 9mm handgun into its holster, a police report said.

The weapon discharged and the bullet entered her upper right thigh and traveled to just above her kneecap.

She was taken to St. Margaret's Hospital in Dyer, Ind., then transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for surgery. The wound was not believed to be life-threatening, according to the sheriff's office.
