Pope Francis: First Jesuit Pope

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

This is a Pope of many firsts. One of them is that he's a member of the Jesuit order -- a group of Catholics who have dedicated themselves to education.

Pope Francis actually taught chemistry at a Jesuit High School.

Brophy College Prepatory School in central Phoenix is the only Jesuit High School in Arizona -- and news that a Jesuit priest had been selected was exciting to the students and staff there.

"He is a person that is very concerned about poor people, about those at the bottom of society and he has chosen to live his own style that way..sometimes they call Cardinals the Prince of the Church..he does not live like a prince," said Father Eddie Reece, President of Brophy College Prepatory.

Reece adds, "Somebody mentioned he had taught high school chemistry.  My own thing is if he taught high school chemistry, he's ready to be Pope."

The Jesuits are the largest order in the Catholic church.
