Jury selected in Beavers tax evasion trial

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A jury is in place at the tax-evasion trial of an influential Cook County Commissioner.

Jury selection was completed at William Beavers' trial on Wednesday afternoon following two days of questioning would-be panelists. The 78-year-old Beavers has pleaded not guilty to four federal tax counts.

At the start of jury selection Tuesday, the defense complained that there were no black men in the 50-person jury pool. On Wednesday there was one female African-American juror among the 12 panelists.

Defense attorneys said a jury of peers for Beavers, who is black, should include some black men. There are two African-Americans among four alternate jurors. Both are women.
