PHOENIX -

A group has launched a recall effort targeting Arizona House minority leader Chad Campbell.

A filing with the Arizona Secretary of State's office by the group called Fire Representative Chad Campbell launches an official signature gathering effort. The group has until July 10 to collect more than 11,500 signatures. If they are successful, a recall election will then be called.

Campbell is one of the most visible Democrats in the state and has been considering a run for governor. He said Wednesday the effort is a purely political attack by conservative Republicans.

"The group behind this is a very radical right group of Tea Party extremists -- very large dollar special interests," he said.  "Some of them are from out of state and I think they're going after me for promoting the things that we've been trying to do, which again..better schools, creating jobs, fighting for medicaid..all of those things."

The filing of a recall committee doesn't means the group has the ability politically to gather enough signatures.

Campbell received more than 33,000 votes in last November's election.

Another group is collecting signatures in an effort to recall Republican Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
