Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- An educational panel has voted to approve the closure of 22 low-performing schools in New York City.

The schools targeted for closure are in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan.

According to the New York Post , the vote by the Panel for Educational Policy came early Tuesday morning.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott told reporters: "We are constantly working with schools to improve their outcomes. There are, unfortunately, some schools that just do not get better."

One-hundred-forty-two schools have been shut down or approved for phase-out since 2002 when Mayor Michael Bloomberg came to office.
