Grenade found in Northwest Side thrift store

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A grenade was found Monday morning among donated clothing at a thrift store in the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side, but it was later determined to be non-explosive.

A 40-year-old employee was sorting through donated clothing about 9:50 a.m. at the store in the 4400 block of West Diversey Avenue when he found the grenade, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

The Unique Thrift Store is listed at that location, according to an online search.

The employee notified his manager, who reported the grenade to police, Mirabelli said. The store was evacuated and traffic was cordoned off.

Responding officers contacted the police Bomb and Arson unit, which determined the grenade was "inert" and did not contain any explosive materials, Mirabelli said. The store was back in business and traffic back to normal about 11 a.m.

The "pineapple" grenade, named due to the similar ridges on the surface, was blue with a green top and attached pin, Mirabelli said.
