Bill would ban EBT abuse in Georgia

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Lawmakers in Georgia are looking to crackdown on welfare abuse and the use of EBT cards at establishments that sell alcohol, tobacco, manicures, and other non-essential products or services.

Georgia's Department of Human Services show says they investigated nearly 300 cases of possible EBT abuse in 2012. Over $4 million goes to those in Georgia who have fallen on tough time times each month and lawmakers want to make sure every penny is going towards providing food and other necessities to them.

House Bill 138 would ban EBT cards from being used at places such as strip clubs, salons, jewelry stores and for vacations. The bill also would prevent a cash withdrawal option closing the loophole to get around the ban.

Rep. Andy Welch introduced the measure. He tells FOX 5 News that he has not encountered any opposition to the current bill.
