Man jumps off overpass at NB I-17 and Northern

PHOENIX -

Traffic on Interstate 17 has returned to normal after the northbound lanes were shut down for several hours due to a man jumping -- or falling from the overpass.

The incident happened Sunday night near the Northern Avenue exit.

Traffic was backed up for miles as cars were diverted off the northbound lanes.

Police say the victim, described as a white male in his 20s, was hit by two or possibly three vehicles.

Witnesses called authorities to report that they saw someone in an area on the highway -- where people are clearly not allowed.

The man was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

As crews investigated, traffic was forced off the interstate at Glendale for nearly four hours.

Officials are still trying to determine whether the man jumped off or if his fall was accidental.

"All indications are that he would have climbed over the chain link fence in order to jump off the overpass onto the freeway..some of the chain link fencing here is geared to protect people from accidentally falling," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

The freeway did not reopen until just after midnight.
