9-1-1 caller describes hit & run driver

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

The car was turned in, but police still need the public's help identifying the driver involved in a deadly hit and run Sunday and now we're hearing the 9-1-1 call from the crash.

The owner of the car involved in the crash turned it in on Monday, but he kept quiet and didn't say if he was behind the wheel.

Operator: "Is the vehicle still there?"
Caller: "No the vehicle took off..it's a little red convertible..I believe it's a Fiat and a white man is driving."

The driver sped off after swerving onto the sidewalk, striking a woman on Northern Avenue near 11th Street.

Caller: "It was a convertible and the windshield on the passenger side was smashed."

The 1970s model Fiat convertible was turned in -- the owner went to police headquarters with his attorney, but chose to keep quiet.  Police don't know if he was behind the wheel, but they believe whoever was driving was under the influence when the car struck 41-year-old Anna Blaze.

Operator: "Is the person breathing?"
Caller: "Yes."

The woman who called 9-1-1 described traumatic injuries to the mother of two.  You can hear the desperation in her voice.

The caller repeatedly asked when the ambulance would arrive, knowing that Blaze's time was running out.

Caller: "Is the ambulance coming?"
Operator: "They're coming ma'am.  Do you understand?  We spoke to them the whole time we've been talking here."
Caller: "Okay, thank you..I've never seen an accident like this before."

Blaze died Monday.  Her friend Karla was able to step out of the way and survived without injuries.

The driver is described as a white male in his 40s. If you can help find him, you're asked to call the Phoenix police.
