PA College Says Students Went Too Far During 'Hell Week'

BRYN MAWR, Pa. -

From silly costumes at breakfast to breaking out into song during class, freshmen at Bryn Mawr College come out of their shells during "Hell Week."

Upperclassmen like sophomore Lauren Malamed helped come up with some of the stunts for first year students. She says it's 100-percent optional.

"It's not at all intended to make people uncomfortable. There's actually a lot of codes that we have to follow when making the tasks."

But this year-- one dorm community is under fire for their "Hell Week" assignments.

Radnor dorm is singled out in a memo from the dean's office-- for seemingly tame violations such as shouting at first year students with bullhorns and throwing toilet paper and cardboard in the common room.

In a statement to FOX 29, Bryn Mawr spokesperson Matt Gray said:

"It was recently brought to our attention that as part of the student tradition known as Hell Week, several students engaged in activities that violate the college's standards of behavior. the college has taken several steps to address this behavior and will continue to work with students so as to minimize the chance of any similar future incidents."

Radnor dorm leaders have resigned and all upperclassman in the dorm have to write a letter of apology to the freshmen.

Students claim everything was done in good fun.

"Nobody wants this tradition to get blacklisted because it's a great tradition a lot of people have fun with it and I think that's why a lot of the Bryn Mawr girls are getting upset because so many other girls had an experience contrary to what was reported. So many other girls did have a good time," explains Malamed.

It's still undecided if the Radnor dorm can participate in hell week next school year.
