Governor meets with student group on accreditation
ATLANTA (AP) - The governor is telling DeKalb County public school students he shares their concern about the district being in danger of losing accreditation, and pledges the state will do everything it can to make sure they get into college.
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal met Thursday by video conference with members of the district's Student Advisory Council. Students expressed concern their diplomas will not be recognized by colleges and universities if the district loses accreditation.
Deal told the group those concerns were the motivation for his decision to suspend six members of the school board. More than 400 people have applied for those seats, and Deal says a committee is reviewing those applications now.
DeKalb County is Georgia's third-largest school district and was placed on probation by an accreditation agency in December.
