Mock train crash drill preps firefighters for hazmat situations

PEORIA, Ariz. -

The Peoria Fire Department participated in a drill Thursday to help them prepare for accidents involving hazardous materials.

A collision involving a train carrying a load of hazardous materials and a car with victims inside was staged, allowing firefighters to practice saving lives while fighting fires.

The drill gave responding crews real life scenarios to help them act quickly during a hazmat situation.

"They obviously have limited resources when they first get here, so they have to prioritize what they gonna do, how they're gonna do it and then work through the situation to make it safe for everybody," said Dep. Chief Rick Picard.

The drills are held quarterly for all west valley fire departments as part of their ongoing training.
