ATLANTA -

Residents in north Georgia and the metro Atlanta area were greeted with a blast of snow on Wednesday, and Rabun County remains under a Winter Weather Advisory until midnight.

The National Weather Service says a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. for all of north and middle Georgia. A Wind Advisory means winds of 20 mph are the norm, with gusts of 35 mph expected.

Residents said they enjoyed seeing the light snow in the north Georgia mountains.

"I think it's wonderful it's beautiful -- absolutely gorgeous and it's not inhibiting any travel much. I think it's doing a good job," said Robert Lester.

Several school systems closed for the day or delayed the start of school due to the winter weather. Dawson, Fannin, Lumpkin, Rabun, Towns, and Union counties had students stay home, and White County delayed the start of school by 2 hours.

North Georgia Tech in Clarkesville started classes at noon.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says crews began plowing roads at 1 a.m. in Towns County, and crews were eventually sent to seven counties to clear roads. GDOT is urging drivers to slow down, refrain from passing, and be aware of black ice.

Police are responding to the Brooklyn Bridge where two whitewashed American flags have been raised. It is not clear who raised the flags or why. The American flags that are normally up at the bridge appear to have been removed. Several officers scaled the bridge and lowered one of the flags at about 11 a.m., reported the Associated Press.

Polluted Gowanus Canal doesn't scare away neighborhood development

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
