FLAT ROCK, Mich. (WJBK) -

Leslie Daniels was involved in a freak accident with unbelievable consequences.  Nearly two weeks ago, the 44-year-old Flat Rock school bus driver had finished her afternoon route and parked her bus at the depot on Division.

Like always, Daniels was helping to guide another bus driver into the plug-in charging station, but we're told this time somehow that bus driver lost control, accelerated, jumped the curb and pinned her against the fence crushing her legs.

"She just kept asking am I going to die," said Shawna Goforth.  "Somebody else there was a paramedic, so they helped get her out from under the bus and then to the hospital."

Daniels had no choice.  Her legs had to be amputated above the knee.

"It was her life or the legs, and my sister's words on the table were do what you have to do to save my life for my kids," Goforth said.

Goforth, who has been with Daniels every day since, said the family is left with many questions wondering how something like this could have happened.

"Still very confusing.  We don't understand, and that's like our biggest thing," she said.  "We want answers."

In the meantime, Goforth said her sister is in tremendous pain and intense therapy, and the length of her hospital stay is indefinite.  However, somehow this loving wife and mother of three manages to stay positive.

"She's strong willed, and she determined to get to where she needs to be to hopefully have prosthetics and be able to walk again sometime in the near future.  That's her goal and she knows that, and she's fighting for it," Goforth said.

To show their support, family and friends are hosting a fundraiser at Joe's Prime Time Pub in Trenton on the evening of March 23.  It's only $10 a person with kids under ten free.  With Daniels no longer working and her husband on disability, every little bit will help.

"Help them right now because it's a long road ahead, and whether something comes out of it for them or not in the long run, it's going to be a long time.  So they need all the help they can get right now," Goforth said.

Donations can also be made at any Monroe Bank and Trust under Leslie Daniels' name or online at www.gofundme.com/25s63s.

But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.
