Gwinnett County police are looking for two men who they say used counterfeit bills at a Walmart. Investigators said that the two men tried to make real $5 bills look like $100 bills.
The men spent $1,000 worth of the fake bills at a Buford Walmart, according to police.
"People will somehow or another bleach a $5 bill, and they'll have access to a $100 bill to print on a $5 bill. So when pass that bill, it appears to be a true bill," said Cpl. Edwin Ritter of the Gwinnett County Police Department.
The clerk held the counterfeit hundred up to the light and saw a watermark, but didn't realize the watermark on the supposed $100 bill was really the $5 watermark. On the $100 bill, a duplicate of the Benjamin Franklin face is seen, but on the $5 bill, it's a water mark of the number five.
"The clerk that took the money looked at it; she thought it was real money. It looked like real money," Ritter said. "They discovered something where they're getting away with it. They're going to get caught and we're going to hold them accountable for it."
Gwinnett County police are still looking into this case, but urge people to check their cash since counterfeit bills are becoming more common
