Fire battled in downtown Lawrenceville

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -

Fire crews battled a blaze that threatened several businesses in Lawrenceville on Monday. One firefighter had to be taken out after part of a ceiling fell on him.

Business owners in the 100th block of East Crogan Street found themselves forced out because of the cloud of smoke coming from their basements.

Meg Earhart struggled to get some of the jewelry and art out of her shop before the fire got too tough to handle.

"I got my cart, came running back and said just grab what you can because we have upcoming shows and I didn't want to start with nothing," said Earhart.

Firefighters found smoke pouring out of the basement of the building and tough conditions in which to fight it.

"It started in the basement level of this business and we had a number of crews go inside in order to put the fire out.  When they got down there, they were faced with sprinklers that were going off and also high smoke and heat down in the basement," said Lt. Colin Rhoden of the Gwinnett County Fire Department.

At one point a firefighter had to be taken out for minor injuries from falling debris.

"We had a fire fighter that had the ceiling collapse on him and he was treated at the scene," said Rhoden.

Crews were able to confine the fire to the basement and extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters and business owners are still trying to assess the damage.
