Monday morning brought a messy commute, as CTA Brown and Purple Line several thousand passengers rode into the Loop to begin their work week. The Wells St. Bridge construction is underway.
There have been warnings for weeks that the bridge would be closed for repairs in conjunction with city construction, meaning CTA trains crossing the Chicago River are shut down until Monday, March 11.
While it's an inconvenience for the next eight days, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said that it's beneficial for the city and commuters in the long run. CTA spokesman told FOX 32 News the project is an investment in the city's infrastructure. The bridge is90 years old.
The mayor is asking for riders' patience while the construction continues
The CTA is offering free shuttle rides to get into the downtown area, but said to allow for a much longer commute while the restoration continues.
