NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
Detectives have identified a suspect in the hit-and-run deaths of a pregnant woman and her husband in Brooklyn and are actively searching for him, the NYPD said.
Police said they are searching for Julio Acevedo, 44. He had a DWI arrest in February, police said. Police believe he was behind the wheel of a BMW that slammed into a livery cab that was bringing the young couple to a hospital shortly after midnight Sunday.
Acevedo and one other man fled the BMW, police said.
The crash killed the couple and injured the livery cab, police said. The baby was delivered via cesarean section, but died Monday morning, according to a family spokesperson.
The baby and the parents will be buried Monday in Kiryas Joel cemetery. There will be no funeral service, according to Isaac Abraham, a family spokesperson.
Police arrested the owner of the BMW. Takia Walker, 29, is charged with insurance fraud. Police say she was not in the car at the time of the crash.
"We in the community are demanding that the prosecutor charge the driver of BMW that caused the death of this couple and infant be charged with triple homicide, this coward left the scene of the accident not even bothering to check on the people of the other car," said Abraham.
The newlywed parents were only 21, a beautiful couple looking forward to the birth of their first child.
"She was so excited and so very, very happy to be pregnant – and so was the entire family," said Carol Silverstein, an aunt of one of the victims.
That happiness and now grief is engulfing an entire community.
Nachman and Raizy Glauber were laid to rest on Sunday.
"Very heartbreaking, there are no words to say," said one mourner.
The livery car driver, Pedro Nunez, 32, also survived. So did the driver of the BMW and his passenger, both of whom left the scene.
"The only reason someone would flee the scene of the crime because they've done something wrong," said Fernando Mateo President of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers.
As police investigate, the tight knit orthodox Jewish community grieves -- leaning on each other and their faith.
"We hope that god gives us the strength to go on with life," added another mourner.
The husband is originally from Monsey in Rockland County, as for his wife, she was born and raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
