Illinois House rejects pension reform bill

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A plan to reform the state's troubled pension system has suffered a major defeat in the Illinois House.

Bills to cut benefits, increase premiums and raise the retirement age got a total of just 11 "yes" votes from Democrats.

Republicans refused to even vote on the proposal.

Unless state lawmakers act soon, the state will be forced to cut more programs, make more layoffs and consider a new round of tax increases.
