Maricopa County sheriff recovers after tripping, breaking shoulder

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

80-year-old Sheriff Joe Arpaio is recovering after he fell, broke a bone and spent the night in a hospital.

But that's only part of the story. The other story is the strong reaction his hospitalization has elicited on the FOX 10 Facebook page.

A lot of well wishes -- but there were also these: "Karma!" – "I hope he gets a Mexican nurse" – and "Too bad the fall didn't kill him."

It's one of our most viewed and commented-on posts ever on the FOX 10 Facebook page. We know Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a polarizing figure -- but it turns out even news of him breaking a bone riles people up.

The sheriff stayed overnight at Saint Joseph's Hospital as a precaution and so that his medication could be monitored.

The injury happened shortly after FOX 10's Marc Martinez interviewed him about a human smuggling ring busted by his office.

Despite the injury, the sheriff was busy tweeting and posting video from his hospital bed.

"I blame myself, I fell," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio in a video taken from his hospital bed and uploaded to YouTube. "I'd like to go back to work tomorrow but I don't think it's in the cards right now."

The sheriff, who will be 81 in June, fell and broke his left shoulder while walking to lunch in downtown Phoenix Thursday.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, he tweeted a photo of his wife by his side, saying, "My wife Ava is showing her love after my fall."

He also tweeted a 2006 photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger recovering from leg surgery after a skiing accident, saying, "I'm not the only tough guy 2 fall and break a bone. It didn't stop Schwarzenegger and it won't stop me."

While he may have broken his shoulder, his sense of humor is still intact. A statement from Arpaio's office says he joked he was glad he got hurt on his left side -- because he needs his right arm for his guns.

The statement also says surgery wasn't necessary.

"I'm not going to say how long I will be out but I'm never out. I work from anywhere and everywhere."

The sheriff expects to leave the hospital Friday morning.
