Convenience store erupts in flames, person of interest hospitalized

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Fire crews battled flames that broke out at a convenience store near 7th Avenue and Hatcher Road.

Firefighters went inside the building to fight the flames, but they had to pull out because it wasn't safe. Firefighters say the roof collapsed minutes after they got out.

About 40 firefighters have worked to fight the fire, which has been difficult to control due to the shape of the roof and amount of products inside.

According to Larry Nunez with Phoenix Fire Department, they found a man with a fractured leg in front of the building when they arrived.

Nunez says they are considering the man a person of interest because it appears he was injured from an elevated area near or on the building.

The man was transported to a hospital and will be interviewed.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
