Storm-ravaged Manhattan restaurant finally reopens

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

When Avenue C's Verso reopened Wednesday after being destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, no one was happier than the regulars.

On October 29, 2012, Sandy's flood waters flowed over the banks of the East River making Alphabet City look more like alphabet soup.

Outside the restaurant, cop cars from the precinct just across the street floated by.

Inside, it was was everything you'd expect to find in an Italian restaurant.

"All I could see was pots and pans in kitchen full of water," said owner Labinot Baraliu. "Bottles of wine floating on water.

Nine feet of water in all destroyed everything in verso except the windows, front door and air conditioning. The damage forced the owners to rebuild everything from scratch.

They say with no help from the government -- just family.

    Police want to question a woman who tried to push a stroller with a baby inside away from a nanny in Chelsea. The incident occurred on 8th Ave. and 17th St. at about 4 p.m. on Thursday. The 8-month-old baby was not harmed. People who were in the area jumped in to stop the woman before she took off southbound on 8th Ave., according to police. A sketch was released on Friday of the suspect.

    Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a sweeping report Thursday that examined New York City's recovery progress from Superstorm Sandy and promised to reform a much-maligned program that was supposed to rebuild wrecked homes. Speaking to about 50 homeowners, officials and community leaders in a storm-battered Staten Island neighborhood, the mayor said the city is aiming to start rebuilding an ambitious 500 homes through its federally funded Build-It-Back program.

    Hundreds of oak barrels of wine are all stacked in one room. You might think this is Napa, California. But it's not. It's the Brooklyn Winery, located in what was once an old pickle factory in Williamsburg. Refrigerated grapes are brought in from the North Fork of Long Island and from the Finger Lakes and then aged in barrels.
