Community Caught in the Crossfire: El Sereno Gang War

Posted: Updated:
El Sereno, CA -

Police say six men – mostly El Sereno gangsters, surround a parked car and demanded to know "where you from."  When one man told them he wasn't a gangbanger, they smashed the window, grabbed the man and pistol whipped him.

Three of those men are now charged with the brutal assault. You can read the charges in the document on this site.

Police tell us the attack is just part of a wave of violence rolling across El Sereno.  Half a dozen men have been murdered recently.  One man was shot after a dispute at a taco truck.

Neighbors say it can get crazy fast on their streets. Gang insider and police tell us it's all part of the continuing gang war between El Sereno Rifa – one of L.A.'s oldest and deadliest gangs – and Metro 13.

But this war has some police worried.

The violence is nothing new. In fact, it's much tamer than the wild days of the early 1990s. Some say the Mexican Mafia prison gang, known as "La Eme," continues to outlaw driveby shootings.   The tactics, however, are turning radical.

Our previous report of El Sereno's effort to build a fake cop car … stealing real cop cars to get the parts … has some gang experts fearful it could be trend.
